Anniversaries in Gaming

I’m taking time away from stories to talk a bit about some important dates that have passed in the gaming world this week:

Mario turns 25!

Mario officially turned 25 yesterday as we celebrate the anniversary of the release of Super Mario Bros. in Japan.  He’s come a long way, and I look forward to seeing where he goes from here…although once you’ve been in space there’s not much left on the old bucket list is there?

Sony Playstation Turns 15

On September 9th, 1995 the Sony Playstation turned 15 years old!  This system gave us many a great game over the years and paved the way for the amazing PS2 and the Playstation 3.  Happy Birthday!

Sega Dreamcast’s Release Marks Sega’s Death

Although it wasn’t officially discontinued until 2001, many consider September 9th, 1999 both the release date and death date of the Sega Dreamcast.  The death of this system also marks the death of Sega as we knew it.  Sega stopped work on its own consoles and began focusing on software.  They’re still very successful today however, producing many games for many systems, PCs and arcades.  As a former Sega Soldier I say “rock on Sega!”, and at the same time I weep for my fallen hero.

That’s all I have for today.  I’m sure I must have missed something, if so, feel free to let me know!

Cheers!  –Cassie

  1. Though an older post, I love to see people writing about the Dreamcast!
